Bringing Food, Tradition and Technology Togther

In the age before the internet (yes little Timmy, there was such a time), The Country Kitchen was the social hub of the home.  It was the place where families gathered, worked together to prepare meals, ate, and shared stories of the day.  It was the place where the mail was read (what are Aunt Margaret and Uncle Lou up to anyway), where bills were paid, cheque books reconciled and orders placed from the catalogue books.

It was the place where we met with friends, shared a meal, a drink and stories of the community we lived in.  It is where we organized spring fairs, canning bee’s and community bake fund raisers.  It was where we could listen in on the party line telephone, and hear all the gossip not fit to print.

It was the place where we cleared the trappings of daily life from the table to sit for a meal.  It was also the place that we laid out all the finery and trimmings to carve the golden bird in celebration of the season.  It was the place where those and all things in between took place.

And everything revolved around food.  Moms were in the kitchen, cooking, baking, canning – and probably washing the baby along the way.  In the time before fast food and a restaurant on every corner, it was Mom’s Place where we came together to eat our daily meals – and Mom’s Place was the country kitchen.  We were drawn to the kitchen because that is where Mom was, and she was busy!  We would be in the kitchen to help out with meal preparation, learn about food and cooking, and partake in the core of the social life of the time.

With this blog, my desire is to emulate the country kitchen.  Primarily, it will be about food and its preparation.  However, it will also encompass stories and snippets of life and the world around us.  It will be a place to share stories, and sit with a cup of coffee to read the news of what I hope will become a comfortable little community.  We will use the technologies of the internet age to create a new little bit of the world the way it used to be.

Like the country kitchen of old, the rules of the house are pretty basic.  Respect, friendliness and kindness are the condition of a seat at the kitchen table.  There’s no talk about religion nor politics as that is what church and City Hall meetings are for.  This is a place of good food, good conversation and good friends.

I hope that as this blog unfolds you will enjoy the things you find here, and decide to come back to visit as we wish all good friends would.

    1. Kathy is my biggest fan, and Chief Food Taster in the world of Scott’s Country Kitchen. She is also the amazingly patient soul who cleans up after my experiments without complaint, and gives me honest feedback on what does and doesn’t work.

She’s biased a bit I think about my cooking ability, but that is just one of the reasons I love her the way I do.

  1. I’m so lucky to have a brother who loves creating amazing dishes in the kitchen and now he can share them everyone.
You will definitely want a seat at this table!

  2. Congratulations Scott on your new site!
It looks FANTASTIC and very welcoming. A great combination of convivial, interesting, newsy, mouth-watering pages, and we look forward to visiting regularly!
Good Luck and All the Best to you, Kathy, & those two cute canine country kitchen collaborators! . . . . . .too much alliteration?

  3. Wow! I just read this intro to my beautiful wife over a glass of wine on a Friday night. What an eloquent description of a magical time that we need to resurrect and embrace! Thanks Scott for reminding us what’s important in life. We can’t wait to try your recipes. Keep up the great work!

    1. Thanks Matt, I am glad you guys enjoyed it. I really enjoy the world we live in, but I do think that in the haste in which we live our lives these days, we have lost many of the simple things that bonded us together into communities. I hope you come back to the site to check out the goings on, and let me know how you like the recipes.

      Scott

  4. Congratulations on your site! I guess we will have to make a few trips up to sample more of your fabulous grub. Nothing is better than great food, lots of wine with fantastic friends, and knowing that we are all in our happy place. Here is to ending all meals with a big sneeze! Miss you guys.
